Memphis Evans It took a lot of music to get through 2020 and this is one of the albums that I played over and over along with David Gilmour’s On An Island. It’s a whole gestalt - a mood you can put on and chill or you can really dig in to the lyrics and arrangements and get super deep about it. Favorite track: How'd I Ever Lose You.

Astoria 06:10
Astoria by Cody Weathers Walk to Astoria, Next to nothing in my pocket Walk to the end Of every road that I've been down Gonna wear down these shoes, Gonna see the great Columbia Gonna strip off these dusty things Gonna jump right in and drown Maybe I'll get there Going nowhere, going somewhere Maybe I'll get there, Then again, might turn around (Solo) Walk to Astoria On a damp and misty Sunday Maybe by Monday night I'll see the bridge ahead I'm gonna walk though I'm weary I'm gonna walk though I hunger I'm gonna use all my living strength Surrender when I'm dead Maybe I'll get there In the sunrise or the sunset Maybe I'll see the light And turn around instead (Scat) Walk to Astoria Right beside the mighty river We go together Ever onward to the sea I'm gonna walk where it leads me I'm gonna walk 'til it frees me Gonna peel back my troubled robes And wash my sorrows clean Maybe I'll rise up Or maybe I'll sink down Maybe it'll be enough Just to see the shining sea Fade: Oh, the river is The destiny I've chosen Oh, the river is the way

How'd I Ever Lose You? by Cody Weathers It happens every day --it's the way things go I don't know why it upsets me so It's natural, but it hurts to be alone I knew it wouldn't last, still, I'm not prepared Disdain stings deep, and I'm always scared It's natural, but it never will feel fair CH: How'd I ever lose you? Why'd we have to change There's no one I can trust, and I can't be free You're moving on, and you're leaving me It's natural, but it's difficult to see (Solo)/(CH) Bridge: You don't need me Why is it so hard to let you go? (Scat) I can see the way that this conflict ends I fade from you, and we're sort of friends It's natural, but I never make amends (CH)

This Dark Night by Cody Weathers You don't know the darkness that surrounds me You don't know the darkness that I fight You don't know the moment that it's drowned me You don't know the darkness of this night Know we're safe and praying For the same sunrise To this dark night (Solo) You won't say the truth that might upset you You won't say the truth you know is right You won't say, and so I can't respect you You won't say the truth before your eyes Know we're safe and praying For the same sunrise To this dark night (Scat) We won't stop until the king is kneeling We won't stop until we break his might We won't stop until the wounds are healing We won't stop until we win this fight Know we're safe and praying For the same sunrise To this dark night Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars Through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming And the rocket's red glare The bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

The Light 03:48
The Light by Cody Weathers Day upon lonely day Chisel and sledge in hand Carving my weakness into The best excuses that I can But now it's up to me Ain't no help to send No bailout now Only these two legs can make me stand CH: Look to the light Your life, the light within you In darkness there is no path To be found Year upon empty year Building my house of sand One day, the tempest come Blow me clean of all I had I got distracted by My petty everyday demands I lost track of my Life in shallow, narrow plans (CH) Bridge: Fallen seven, rise now eight I fight and fall No, that's not all Brick upon solid brick Doing the best I can Building that house again Being a better man I got my reasons straight Tied to a stronger strand I saw a brilliant light I got a second chance

Shadows Fall 06:07
Shadows Fall by Cody Weathers There are some things I will never talk about But that bottle's gonna break And let 'em out Feeling hopeless, Overwhelmed and overboard Know I oughta But decline to seek the Lord CH: With a sudden shift of light The shadows fall Like the inky flood of night Consuming all (Solos) There are reasons I believe, but cannot prove Heavy troubles That no lever ever moves Feeling lonely Though surrounded by my friends Know it oughta But the pain just never ends (CH) There are some things I could never live without Trusted beacons When I'm dark and gripped by doubt Feeling humble, Tempest-tossed, and homeward-bound Though my purpose Briefly lost, my soul was found

Get You Dirty by Cody Weathers There's a fire on my floor There's a fire in my house And it's burning through the roof And it's burning through my mouth An inferno at my heels And I cannot quench the blaze If I want to breathe again Gotta solve the burning maze CH: It's a late, late night Gotta get up early But before I sleep Gotta get you dirty As the blacksmith strikes the blade Gonna shape her molten steel Gonna hammer it with stone Gonna make the leather peel There's some water in the well There's some water in the stream Gonna douse our bodies cool Gonna turn it all to steam (CH) Bridge: (No dark) No dark (Can swallow up) Can swallow up (This light) This light (So bright) So bright

about

The story behind this EP:
CW: In July 2020, I had a rare rush of inspiration and in quick succession wrote four brand new songs. This being the middle of a pandemic, and with the band in quarantine from each other, we debuted them via a solo livestream (along with a separate encore of two other recent, but not hot-off-the-presses songs on a separate platform). Following that performance, the band got to work filling in the details. First, I recorded djembe and backing vocals over the original vocal/guitar/piano performance. Then Sean added bass and his own backing vocals, followed by Jean adding lead guitar --each from their own home studios. Finally, I reached out to my good friend Femme en Noir to add some additional backing vocals to "This Dark Night" since the initial inspiration for the song came from something I had texted her when she was asking about how we were doing during the authoritarian Federal occupation of downtown Portland during the BLM protests. Finally, with her vocals in hand, I added one more layer of harmony too blend with what she had provided.

This is a dark time, but within it, there are still moments of light, kindness and hope. As I texted Linds... I mean, Femme en Noir, "Know we're safe and praying for the same sunrise to this dark night." Be safe, be illuminated, and fight the darkness wherever it may find you.

All artist proceeds from this EP will be donated to the ACLU.
